Changes to the CanSkate, Pre-CanSkate and CanPower Programs

As of January 1, 2018, the City of Thunder Bay’s Instructional Skating program, Fort William FSC Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, and CanPower programs and Thunder Bay FSC Pre-CanSkate & CanSkate programs are being merged into a new group called the Thunder Bay Skating Academy.

The reasons for this joint transaction are:

  • All of the “learn to skate” programs will be under one umbrella
  • Increase access to the community by broadening programs
  • Have all staff trained with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) to increase the quality of the program
  • Avoid duplication of services in Thunder Bay

The Thunder Bay Skating Academy will be running at Current River, Delaney, Fort William Gardens, Grandview, Neebing, and Port Arthur arenas.

The 2018 winter sessions will be 10 weeks long with each lesson being 45 minutes in length or 30 minutes in length (depending on skill level/age). For 30 minute sessions (Pre-CanSkate), the fee is $110 and the 45 minute sessions (CanSkate) will be $150. For dates and locations, please see the Thunder Bay Skating Academy’s advertisement in the Winter Key or website.

Registration will open Friday December 1, 2017 to coincide with the launch of the Winter Key. To register please visit:

Thank You for your continued support of skating in Thunder Bay,

FWFSC Board of Directors

Note: We’ve received some questions since the initial email went to our parents on Sunday, November 12, so here is some additional information.

If your child already skates at the Fort William Gardens, you can still register your child to skate only at the Fort William Gardens. The sessions will be at the same time, on the same days but the registration will be done through the Thunder Bay Skating Academy.  You won’t have to skate at a different arena if you don’t want to. The Thunder Bay Skating Academy offers additional sessions, on different days and at different locations but if you still want to skate on Sunday and Wednesday at the Gardens, you can do that.

Ice Show: We’ll send out information on the ice show in the coming weeks. Please watch your child’s mailbox (where they get their name tags).

If you have any other questions, you can contact the Thunder Bay Skating Academy or email the club at

Registration is now open!
